Discover the Power of Orthodontic Excellence and get to know our National Association Today
Orthodontics is a highly specialized dental field focusing on facial growth and correcting teeth and jaw misalignments in children and adults.
Establishing a national association for orthodontic specialists originated from a group of Nigerian Orthodontists who attended the 101st Annual Conference of the American Association of Orthodontists in Toronto, Canada, in May 2001. In April 2004, the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO) was officially founded, with Prof M.C Isiekwe, a pioneer orthodontist in Nigeria, being nominated as its inaugural president. Currently, there are fewer than 40 orthodontists serving a population of 170 million, although orthodontic awareness is steadily growing, particularly in major urban areas.
In April 2006, the association established an affiliation with the World Federation of Orthodontists. The Nigerian Association of Orthodontists aspires to become a leading association dedicated to the advancement and promotion of orthodontic practice in Nigeria and worldwide, striving for excellence in its mission.
The Association's Goals Encompass the Following
Fostering a culture of high ethical standards within the realm of orthodontic clinical practice.
Facilitating improved communication and collaboration among orthodontists, institutions, and other professional entities.
Safeguarding the specialty's interests and the well-being of its members.
Articulating viewpoints on all proposed legislation that impacts the practice of orthodontics.
